Winter is almost over. The cold, dark nights are getting slightly lighter and although there is still a chill in the air, summer is in our sights. One of the best things to do in the summer is spend time in your garden, and if you have a decking area, there’s so much you can do with it. Get your decking ready for the height of summer now with these useful tips.
Make it the focus
A decking area makes a great centrepiece for your garden. It makes an ideal area for seating, a BBQ or even a hot tub. If you’re going to spend money on creating a decking area, there’s no point in doing it half-heartedly – make it the focal point of your outside space.
Play with the decking itself
Your decking area doesn’t have to be a square with straight lines. You can use a curved shape which will reflect the natural shape of the garden and choose different types of materials. If you only have a small space, consider separating your decking on two levels as this will create the illusion of having more space.
Consider a cover
If the weather where you live can be temperamental, you might want to consider adding a covered area to your decking. This could be a simple shelter such as a canopy or even something as unique as a tiki hut. This will help you continue to enjoy your decking even when the weather is less than enjoyable.
Make it a social area
Decking makes an ideal place to socialise with your friends and family, so make it welcoming. You could add a table and chairs to create a dining area, or take some cushioned seating for everyone to cosy up on. You could also incorporate some entertainment such as speakers, a trampoline or even a hot tub.
Add some heat
Even in the summer, the nights can get chilly and sometimes you are still enjoying your garden when the cold arrives. You can counteract this by adding a heat source to your decking – a fire pit looks sophisticated and classy, but a patio heat lamp is equally as effective.
Don’t be afraid of colour
You can use deck stain on timber decking or different coloured deck boards to highlight certain areas of your decking. This helps the decking to look unique. You can also use furniture, gravel and plants to add points of colour throughout the decking.
Light it up
Great lighting can really help you set the mood on your decking when the night draws in. You could place lights in the decking, place solar lights around the border of the decking area or simply hang outdoor fairy lights. If you’re looking for a less permanent lighting solution, just light some candles on your table.
Add flowers and plants
Flowers, plants and even fruit and vegetables can be a great way to add colour to your deck and make it look more inviting. However, it’s important to consider which plants will be suitable for your deck. If you live in a highly hot and humid area, you want plants that will hold their own in extreme heat. If you live in a wet area, you’ll want plants that like to have a lot of water.
Check it is safe to use
Before you host a party to celebrate the summer, inspect your decking. Look for nails sticking up and check the wood for termite damage. The best time to do this is when you’re getting the decking ready for summer, so as you are cleaning and sweeping up, check for damage. It could be that your deck just needs a coat of sealer and then it is good to go.
Your decking can be anything you want it to be. You can keep it private and use it as a place to cosy up with a book on summer evenings, or kit it out with entertainment and seating areas to ensure that it is the ultimate party destination. Whatever you choose, having decking is a great way to spend more time enjoying your garden.
